Here is one photo of last summer. From here you can see, why the warm cap race was ended before the right time. There was not enough wind.

Tutustuttiin hiljaiseen Viinistun kylään. Syötiin rannan ravintolassa.

We walked on Viinistu village. Eat lunch in the harbour restaurant.

Lähdettiin keskipäivällä luovimaan kohti Viinistua luoteistuulessa. Tuuli kääntyi lounaaseen ja jouduttiin luovimaan. Etupurje reivattiin samoin kuin iso. Ilta ehti saapua, samoin yö. Aamukin ehti valjeta ennen Viinistuun saapumista.

We started to tack towards Viinistu in northwest wind. The wind turned to southwest and we had to tack. We must get reef to the foresail and also the headsail. The evening came and also the night. The morning came also before coming to Viinistu.

Kiirettä pitää, jotta saadaan Litti vene siihen kuntoon, että sillä voi osallistua ensi viikonlopun ranking-kisaan.

It seems to become a little hurry, so that we can get Litti -boat ready for ranking race in the coming weekend.

Isokoskelot ovat palanneet? Vai ovatko? Uiskentelevatko ne Kymijoen sulassa sen takia, että se on tällä hetkellä niitä harvoja sulina säilyneitä vesiä?

Goosanders are back? Or are they? Do they swim in the Kymijoki for that reason, that that is one of the few places, which have remained unfrozen?

Nyt kun vedet ovat jäässä, on aika huoltaa kuntoa. Paino pitää saada hallintaan. Sitä varten lenkkeilen Jumalniemen lenkillä.

Now when the sea is covered by ice, it is time to jogg. I have to get my weight down. For that reason I jogg in the nearby regions.

Here are some pages from Sakari Pälsis old book  from the ice of  Gogland. Here he tells how men hunted seals from ice. They had with them only a tent and a sleigh.

Suursaari /Gogland

Tässä valokuva, joka kertoo millaisen matkan Suursaaren posteljoonit saivat hiihtää. Saari heijastelee kuvan vasemmassa reunassa.

Here  is a photo, which tells how long way had the postman to ski on former days. The island can be seen on the left corner of the photo.

Paljaalla silmällä saattoi Suursaareen nähdä, mutta joko se ei ollut tässä kuvassa tai sitten se ei näy. Taitais minulta jäädä leipä saamatta, mikäli sinne pitäisi postia hiihdellä. Varmaan jos koko talven harjoittelisi niin kerran sinne vois päästä. Vuosisadan alussa posti hiihteli saareen viikoittain.

Whit bare eye you could see Gogland somewhere there, but either it is not in this picture or it can not be seen from a photo.  To that Island the postman skied weekly, which was a hard job.

Hyvää uutta vuotta 2011 /Good new year 2011

Toivotaan, että valot eivät sammu vielä tulevanakaan vuonna koti-Suomesta ja huonompien vuosien jälkeen seuraa parempia.

Hyvää uutta vuotta 2011 kaikille tutuille ja tuntemattomille.

I hope, that the lights do'nt got switched off on the coming year from home-Finland an hope that after not so good years there will be better years.

Suursaaren posti /Gogland post

Nyt kun on vuodenvaihde tulossa ja jää alkaa peittää Suomenlahteakin, on aika lueskella kirjoja. Alla on pari skannausta Sakari Pälsin kirjasta Suursaaren jäillä. Kirjassa Sakari Pälsi kertoo, millaista elämä on ollut Suursaaressa edellisen vuosisadan alussa.

Mielenkiintoinen yksityiskohta on kertomus postin kulusta. Posteljoonien matka oli rapeat kolmekymmentä kilometriä Kotkasta Suursaareen, suksilla. Ei mahtanut toimia yhtä nopeasti kuin nykyisin, emaililla.

Now when the year comes to its end and the ice covers also the Gulf of Finland, it is time to read books. Below there are a couple of scannings from Sakari Pälsis book  named : On the ice of Gogland. In the book Sakari Pälsi tells, what kind was the life in the Island Gogland in the start  last century.

Interesting point is the story of post delivery. The postman had to ski 30 kms from Kotka to Gogland. Surely it was not very quick post, as nowadays by email.

 

Kelo /Old tree

Muutama vuosi sitten haettiin lupaa sille, että suurinpiirtein tälle paikalle tulisi tuulivoimala Långön saarelle. Hyvä juttuhan se tuulivoima on, mutta jotenkin toivoisin, ettei sitä ihan joka paikkaan laitettaisi.

Some years ago there were designed a wind generator to this place in Långö Island. The wind energy is a good thing, but I hope that it will not be placed everywhere.

Kun istut kalliolla ja paistat makkaraa, ajattelet, että mailla halmeilla ei näy ristin sielua. Vaan täälläkin isoveli valvoo. Sen hetken kun käännät katseen muuallle tai käyt kusireissulla niin makkarat ovat hävinneet. Kalliolla vain viaton lokki.

When you sit on rock and stake sausage, you might think, that you are completely alone. But still here as well the Big Brother is watching you. If you look at other direction for a moment or you visit toilet, then the sausages have gone. Only the inicent seagull is left on the rock.

Jumalniemi jäätyy /Godscape freezes

Tänne päättyy Kymijoki. Kun veden virtaus hiljenee, joki jäätyy. Edessä näkyvät Hietasen sataman valot.

Niemellä on juhlallinen nimi, mutta kukaan tuntemani henkilö ei ole osannut selittää, mistä nimi on tullut.

Here ends the river-Kymijoki. When the speed of the flow slows down, then the river freezes. In front of you can see the lights of Hietanen harbour.

The cape has impressive sounding name.  Nobody knows, where the cape has got its name.

Käytiin viime viikolla monirunkoveneliiton vuosikokouksessa. Paljonhan niitä monirunkoveneilijöitä onkin, lähinnä Helsingin seudulla. Noin puolella jäsenistä on itse tehty vene, puolella ostettu. Alla linkki liiton sivuille.

We visited the yarly meeting of multihull association. There were many member, mostly from Helsinki district. About half of them have a boat by there own, a half of them have bought there boat. Here is the link to their page.

Spinaakkeri /The spinaakker

Viime kesänä oli paljon aurinkoisia päiviä. Tuuli oli kevyttä ja ulapalla purjeveneet lipuivat kohti vieraita vesiä spinaakkerit pullollaan.

Last summer in Finland there were many days like this. The wind was light and sailing ships were going towards foreign waters the spinnakers ful of wind.

Kallion koloissa kasvaa tällaisia Lehmässä. Ne eivät kuitenkaan ole horsmia.

Between rocks this kind of a flower was groving in the Island Lehmä. They are however not epilobiums.
